  • Xanga Subs v2.0 - The Random Subscription "Feature"

    Further Update (5:30 PM EST):
both issues should be fixed now . Please leave a comment if you're still seeing either of the two issues below on your site.

Ok, the rollout of Subs v2.0 went pretty well yesterday. It was a hugely complicated project with a lot of new code, so the fact that Xanga kept running after we launched means it went pretty well .

Thanks for all your positive feedback on the new interfaces and functionality . I'm jazzed that y'all liked the updates, for the most part... But there are two issues that you've brought to our attention (many times over) that I wanted to address for you quickly:

    1. Random Subscriptions Appearing on Your "Sites I Read" page:

"ROFL...Ok, I'm going to quit trying to read my sir...they are all scrambled with people I have never heard of... Hope the bugs go soon...need some cyber Raid!"

"ahhhhh my sites i read section is going crazy. whats the deal? like none of the new entries are showing, its showing me peoples entries that i havent even subscribed to, and its showing entries with different usernames. what do i do?"

We are on the case! (I just checked out my own Sites I Read page and saw a few new Xanga users I'd never heard of, too.) We've tried a few fixes already, but they obviously didn't work. Now monsur may have finally tracked down the source of this bug (crossing fingers), and we'll be trying a new fix later today. We'll keep working away at this one until it's totally fixed - but in the meantime, you might just want to treat this bug as an opportunity to meet some new Xangans .

    2. Ordering of Names in the Sites I Read module:

"Hmm - any chance that we can somehow get "sites I read" to be listed by "recently updated"?  It was a nice feature to figure out who's been on their site lately..."

"...on the "sites i read" page, on the left, the subscriptions are in order of when i subscribed to them. I liked how they were in order of who updated the latest, so I can see a list of my friends who have updated lately instead of having to browse all the entries."

Totally agreed - it does make more sense to order the names in the Sites I Read modules by date of last update. It helps to find users who actually have something new to read. But this one turned out to be tricky for Xanga's systems...

Ordering that list by date of last update has always been painful for our servers. But it was a manageable pain... that is, until recently. Now that the total number of subscriptions in Xanga's system has gotten really huge, our old way of ordering that list just started causing too many problems (it sometimes just broke your "Sites I Read" page altogether, so you couldn't see any of your subscriptions).

Monsur is looking into both of these issues right now. We'll post that fix for the first issue later today and we'll keep you posted on both issues!
