Bringing Harmony to Xanga
We're really excited to announce that Xanga has teamed up with SHiNE: Seeking Harmony in Neighborhoods Everyday.
SHiNE is a non-profit organization that brings together teens and young adults from across the country to explore the big issues affecting their communities: everything from racism & youth violence to local & international politics.
Why are we so excited? Well, we've been working hard to make the Xanga Community as safe as possible with features like blocking and protected posting. But when it comes to helping with specific issues - especially with our teen users - we've often felt like we lack the expertise.
But SHiNE has lots of experience dealing directly with these issues! For example, SHiNE has pulled together a special section on ways that you might commemorate the 9/11 anniversary. They've also pulled together resources on other important issues like depression & suicide, body image, bullying... you name it. Our hope is that SHiNE may help us start tackling these tricky issues head-on!
You may have seen SHiNE's name as the major organizer behind MTV's Fight for Your Rights Program. But they're constantly organizing other events and programs across the country.
Over the next few weeks, we'll be posting more details on how Xanga and SHiNE will be working together, as well as information about specific SHiNE programs. But in the meantime, please visit the SHiNE website if you want to learn more about their organization. And please let us know what you think!

Imagine how thrilled I was to click on that link and find this (below) on SHiNE's 9/11 "Remembrance" page:
SHiNE :: Real Life :: Culture Shock
Tolerance is the Key
Blame the victim, much? Maybe this is what the Blame America crowd wants to teach their kids, but it's not something I want to teach mine, and I don't want them doing it for me. "Hating people because of their beliefs, ...[and] culture" is what caused those terrorists to attack us, but that doesn't seem to be what SHiNE is going for here, since they immediately want the reader to "...[recognize] your own tendecy...to discriminate." I am also not the least bit "thrilled" by Xanga's choice in adding something so biased, without at least attempting anything to counter it. "Tolerance" is all well and good, but I've reached the point where I'd fall over in a dead faint if any of it were directed at non-hyphenated Americans, patriotic Americans who stand up for their country and their beliefs, etc., so don't preach to me about "tolerance." When it's a one-way street (Left turns only), it ain't very tolerant. In the aftermath of 9/11, one of the most important lessons that many of us learned was how hating people because of their beliefs, skin color or culture can get out of control and cause a lot of hurt and pain. Check out tolerance.org's bias tests and see how biased you are against others. The first step to ending hate is recognizing your own tendency (even if it's subconscious) to discriminate.
but its good that xangas doing something like.
community-beneficial type thing
