XANGA - NOW WITH REAL SEARCH!
Thanks to everyone who helped beta test Xanga's new search features. It seemed to be working ok on the beta site, so Monsur just uploaded it to the live site!
During the beta testing, we got a few questions about the three search options:
» Xanga Search
I like it, very fast. Need to be able to search more of xanga tho
Totally - we are working on making Xanga Search results more current! But we already have about half the database in there, and we didn't want to make you all have to wait any longer.

'Xanga search is a premium feature...'
Thumbs down.
Posted 1/10/2004 at 11:36 AM by ntgWe're phasing in Xanga Search. First, we're going to make sure that our search engine can take the load from premium members. If it can, we're going to start looking into how we can extend Xanga Search to all classic members, too!
» Web Searchif i want to search the web im just going to use google or the yahoo search engine like i always do... no need to go to xanga just for that.
Absolutely - we couldn't imagine offering better web search than the huge search engines that you already use... which is why we just brought one of those big search engines to Xanga for you! Xanga's new Web Search feature is powered by one of the companies that you mentioned, mhsballerina07 - it's the same search. I'll leave the details to a future post (gotta coordinate an announcement with that company), but it's pretty easy to tell who it is

» Users Search
it sux cuz free users cant search for their friends. it used to be enabled so that anyone could do it.
Hmm... Sorry for any confusion minqqq - User Search is available to all Xanga users - both Premium and Classic users. You just need to sign in do a User Search, but you don't need to be a Premium member.

Looks good... much better than what we had before! ...In the future, it would be very usefull for an adv. search that would search: first/last name, 'city/state', schools/universities, etc. Let me know if you have plans to do this!

Where Can You Try a Search?
There are two places you can try the new search features:
1. the search bar on Xanga's Frontpage
(if you don't see the search bar on your own site, you may have hidden it - to get it back, just go into your Look & Feel Settings page and select "Yes" next to "Show Search Bar?", then scroll down and click the "Save Changes" button)
2. the search bar on Your Own Xanga Sites

XANGA WILL TAKE OVER THE WORRRRRLD.
Am looking forward to just what the real possibilities are for this search engine. I did do a search for the beta test but can tell you that now that it is up and running, I do a lot of searching and am on Xanga a lot and it will get a real workout from me. We will see as I am a pro at using search and love the one I use normally. Thanks much for the heads up and am looking forward to seeing just what the possibilities are.
LittleE
But the ONE feature that would have been MOST helpful to me is missing. That is, the ability to search ONLY within a specified Xanga site, either my own, or one I am visiting.
Let's say I know I published a recipe for carrot soup, or my friend Josephine did. I know neither she nor I routinely write about carrots. Being able to search on the word carrot ONLY in a given site would quickly locate the recipe. As it is, the word carrot will no doubt yield hundreds of finds, making the search futile or else tedious beyond useful.
Another suggestion: the default search might be better set to "Xanga" rather than "web". I mean, isn't that the main point of the tool? To search through Xanga? Or is this a commercial/financial handshake between you and sponsors?
Just my two-bits...
Great!
(Now visit my site, please. And put it in the spotlight)
this stinks
xanga search stinks b/c you cant only search for user names/screens names and never the scually names of ppl
Sorry i think i found a bug...
I am a Premium member and i can't get the search bar to appear on my skin. I try the but the old search thingy comes up. Is there a new key word i can use to make it come up on my site..?
Cheers
