  • PROFILE PICTURE UPDATES

Janet just launched a new set of profile picture code that allows:

    • Better Quality Profile Pics - a lot of you emailed us to say that your profile pics got all messed up when you uploaded them:

"Hi, I am trying to upload a pic of 7kb, yet everytime I upload it, my face gets distorted. Is there a way to solve this problem?"

"My issue is more aesthetic: When I upload a profile pic that's only 8K, it still gets squashed down to under 4K. The problem is, my baby boy is exceptionally cute and the increased compression makes him look awful! Can't you guys throttle back on the compression so that if the image is under 30K or whatever, it goes through as is?"

Heh, sorry for making you (and your children) look less than sublime... We just got a huge new image server in place so now we can support much higher quality profile pics.

If you've already uploaded your profile pic and you're not exactly thrilled with the quality, you can just re-upload it now to get a better quality pic.

    • Instant Changes When You Upload a New Profile Pic - a few of you also mentioned that your profile pic didn't seem to change when you uploaded a new one...

"The picture I uploaded for my profile is NOT the picture appearing on my site. It's the only picture I have uploaded, so I don't even know where this other picture that is showing up is coming from. I thought maybe both photos had the same filename, so I changed it, and the wrong photo is STILL showing. What's going on?"

This one was a caching issue (some browsers were having trouble realizing when new pics were uploaded, so they kept showing you your older pic). The new code gives every profile pic a totally unique name, which should help your browser show you the absolute newest version of your profile pic, as soon as you upload it.

This new code should also help anyone who's using a custom javascript that changes the word "profile" into something else. That script will break any profile pic that has the word "profile" in its name. Now that every profile pic gets a totally unique name, your pics should be fine after you re-upload them.

We're continuing to work on profile pics and other picture issues, based on all your great feedback - so please keep it coming! Thanks.

How does this affect the rotating profile pic issue? If I want to upload my pics again to get them to be better quality, do I need to do anything different in the naming protocol to keep the rotating picture feature working correctly?

hmm... just got an idea, maybe you xanga people can think about it. Would it be possible to have a setting in peoples xangas about whether or not they want to hear the music on other peoples xangas? Obviously this wouldn't work for people without a xanga, but it could be very nice for those of us who hate to have the music they are listening to interupted by the music on others xangas. It shouldn't be a feature that would be too hard to implement either, and better yet, it wouldn't really put too much stress on the xanga (assuming that all you have is a boolean stored on their xanga and an if statement in whatever preprocessing language you use...)

Cool idea DeshiStyolz - we have to make a few more improvements to the way we handle codes n' stuff on people's sites before we can pull off the music on/off feature you suggest... but it's definitely something we've discussed around here.

Don't you think the current "Premium Spotlight" people have been on long enough?  I remember the group before the current one, with jyoseph and jaems and whoever else, only lasted a couple of weeks. This groups has been on display for at least 3 months. Not that I don't find their blogs interesting, but I believe that, to keep things fair, you should get a new group up in the spotlight. And no, I don't have Premium, so I'm not shamelessly begging on my own behalf .

Are you aware of what has happened at James site.  Not only was he hacked and lost his pages but the hacker has now left another message for James readers.  I think you need to be looking into this and hope you will very soon.  A lot of us are wondering just what is next but none are thinking very straight.  I'd appreciate Xanga looking into the problem.

    Regards,

Doing and awesome job Marc, was just wondering when the multiple profile pictures would be working again.  I know john said you're working that issue.  I was just curious.  Keep up the great work! ~Matt...

Is there a way to click on the profile pic and have original larger image that people upload pop up in a separate window? Then once people are done looking at the pic they can close the pop-up window and continue reading the weblog. It sux that my picture is so large but when it is uploaded as the profile pic it's so small! :-/ What's your thought?
    Thanks!
  • goldenlove
